PRODDATUR MUNICIPALITY

              
In pursuance the Proddatur town was constituted as IIIrd Grade Municipality in the year 1915, upgraded as Second Grade in the year 1956, Ist Grade Municipality in the year 1980 and presently stood as Special Grade Municipality from 1998.  The population of the Proddatur town as per 2001  Census is 1,50,309 and increasing the population from 1,07,070 to 1,50,309 from 1981 to 2001.  The existing area of the Municipality is 7.121 Sq.Kms.


            The population of the Municipality including the proposed Grama Panchayats comes to 2,00,432 with an area of 36.25 Sq.Kms.  Proddatur is a major Commercial center in Rayalaseema as well as in the State.  It is famous center for trading of Gold, Cotton, Rice, Ground-nut oil and other essential commodities.  The town is situated 13 Kms away from Mumbai-Chennai Railway line i.e., Yerraguntla Railway Station, 21 KMs away from the Tirupathi-Hyderabad Highway i.e., from Mydukur  and surrounded with famous Zuari Cement, Indian Cement factories, Rayalaseema Thermal Power Project.  There is Penna river flowing south side of the town.  K.C. Canal flows adjoining the town.   Moreover, the Proddatur town is one of the historical place in the State called as “Dakshina Kaasi” in view of ancient Lord Ramalingeswara Swamy Temple. There are several historical Temples, Mosques and Churches.  It is famous for celebrations of Dusserah (Vijaya Dasami) in the Country and said to be 2nd Mysore in the Country.   The main crops in the areas surrounding the Municipality are Rice, Ground-nut, Cotton, Sun flower etc.,  Therefore the Proddatur town is acting as Major Commercial Trading Centre in the State.
